Tips for Getting an Internship

  • This is the email template I used to reach out to professors. I’ve sent over 150 emails. You WILL get a lot of NOs and no responses, but please don’t let that discourage you.
    • I know this email template might look too short, but professors are busy people, and they get hundreds of emails a day.
    • Make it polite but concise. Show your passion and interest in the topics that they are researching in.
  • Also, schedule your email to send around 9:30 am in the morning for the professor. Make sure to check your time zone.
  • Make sure to attach your resume to your email so that you can show that you know what you’re doing
    • If you need help with your resume, feel free to contact me or ask an adult on campus. They know what they’re doing.
  • If you’re a US citizen or are a permanent resident, reach out to professors in US universities
  • If you’re not, try contacting professors in Canadian, English, and your home country universities.
    • Add the USA part when contacting non-American professors
  • You will most likely have an interview with your lab. Please prepare. Read studies. Read ongoing studies.
    • Some questions to think about
      • why are you interested in the lab
      • what publications you’ve found interesting, and why
      • do you have experience with research
      • your strengths and weaknesses
      • how many hours can you work
  • Prepare questions to ask your interviewer
    • What would I be doing?
    • How many studies are being conducted during the time period that you’re available?
    • Lab cultures?
